Acidic drinks and enamel erosion

Learn how acidic beverages can wear away your tooth enamel and how to prevent this type of dental damage.

Dental erosion occurs when the protective enamel on your teeth is softened and worn away by acids. Unlike decay, which is caused by bacteria, erosion is often a direct result of the acidic foods and drinks we consume. Common culprits include carbonated soft drinks, sports drinks, fruit juices, and even certain types of flavoured water. Over time, this wear can lead to tooth sensitivity, discolouration, and a change in the shape of the teeth.

Water and plain milk are the safest choices for your teeth. If you do enjoy acidic drinks, try to have them only at meal times to minimise the duration of exposure. Saliva is the body's natural defence against acid, so keeping your mouth hydrated is essential. In India, many people enjoy citrus-based drinks or sodas, which should be balanced with good hygiene and mindful consumption to prevent long-term enamel loss.

Once tooth enamel is lost, it cannot grow back naturally. Therefore, prevention is the best strategy. If you notice your teeth becoming more sensitive or looking more yellow, these could be signs of erosion. A registered dentist can evaluate the health of your enamel and suggest protective treatments or lifestyle changes to prevent further damage. Regular check-ups are essential for monitoring the wear and tear on your teeth.
