Braces and aligners: plan for the whole journey

Explore questions about braces and clear aligners, professional supervision, cleaning and long-term follow-up.

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth to address selected alignment and bite problems. Braces and removable clear appliances are tools within a treatment plan, not interchangeable products suitable for every mouth.

Begin with an assessment of teeth, gums and the problem you want treated. Ask what improvement is realistic, which alternatives exist and what monitoring will be needed. Tell the clinician about previous dental work and current symptoms.

Discuss cleaning, eating and what to do if an appliance breaks or causes discomfort. Ask whether extractions or other treatment are part of the proposal. Request an explanation before consenting to irreversible steps.

Understand the responsibilities after active treatment, including the clinician’s advice on retention and review. An online photograph cannot replace a complete assessment. Compare the care and supervision included in a plan, rather than choosing only by appliance appearance or an advertised completion date.
