Ceramic, zirconia and metal crowns

Different materials are used for dental crowns depending on the location of the tooth and aesthetic requirements.

When choosing a dental crown, your dentist will recommend a material based on the tooth’s position and your functional needs. Metal crowns, often made from gold or non-precious alloys, are exceptionally strong and require less tooth removal. These are frequently used for back molars where the force of grinding and chewing is greatest.

Ceramic or porcelain crowns are popular for front teeth because they can be matched to the natural colour of your existing teeth. While they provide an excellent aesthetic result, they may be more prone to chipping than metal versions. These are ideal for patients who want their dental work to be indistinguishable from their natural smile.

A registered dentist will evaluate your bite and oral habits before suggesting the most appropriate material. For example, if you have a habit of clenching your teeth, a more durable material like zirconia might be necessary. Each material has specific advantages, and the right choice helps ensure a comfortable and functional bite.
