Cleaning and maintaining dental implants

Practical advice on how to care for dental implants to ensure their longevity.

Dental implants require the same level of care as natural teeth, if not more. Although the implant itself cannot decay, the gums and bone supporting it are susceptible to infection. To keep your implants healthy, you must remove plaque every day. This involves brushing twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush and using a low-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching the implant surfaces.

Standard flossing may not be enough for implants. Your dentist might recommend interdental brushes, which are small, specially shaped brushes that fit into the gaps around the implant. Water flossers can also be effective at dislodging food particles and bacteria from hard-to-reach areas. The goal is to clean every surface of the prosthetic tooth and the gum line thoroughly but gently.

Professional maintenance is equally important. You should visit your dentist or dental hygienist regularly for professional cleanings. They use specialized instruments made of plastic or carbon fibre that clean the implant without damaging its surface. During these visits, the dentist will also check the stability of the implant and the health of the surrounding tissues to catch any potential issues early.

If you have a history of grinding your teeth, your dentist may suggest a night guard to protect your implants from excessive force. Avoiding very hard foods and abstaining from tobacco will also help maintain the integrity of the bone and gums. By following a strict oral hygiene routine and attending regular reviews, you can help ensure your dental implants remain functional for many years.
