Closing a gap between front teeth

Discussing the various dental options for closing gaps, from orthodontic treatment to cosmetic bonding and veneers.

A gap between the front teeth, known as a diastema, is a common occurrence that many people choose to close for aesthetic or functional reasons. There are several ways to address this, ranging from moving the teeth with orthodontics to filling the space with dental materials. The best approach depends on the size of the gap and the health of the surrounding teeth.

Orthodontic treatment, such as braces or clear aligners, is often the most conservative method because it moves the natural teeth into the correct position without altering their structure. This is ideal if the gap is caused by misalignment. However, this process takes time and requires a commitment to wearing retainers afterward to ensure the gap does not return.

For a faster result, composite bonding can be used to subtly widen the teeth and close the space. This involves adding resin to the sides of the teeth, which is shaped to look natural. Alternatively, veneers can be placed over the teeth to change their size and shape. These options provide immediate results but involve adding material to or slightly modifying the natural teeth.

Before deciding on a treatment, a dentist will check for underlying causes, such as gum disease or a thick labial frenum (the tissue connecting the lip to the gum). If these issues aren't addressed, the gap may reappear even after cosmetic work. Consulting a registered dentist ensures that the chosen method is safe and suited to your specific dental anatomy.
