Dental bridges: replacing missing teeth

A dental bridge uses existing teeth to support a replacement for one or more missing teeth.

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to adjacent natural teeth or implants. This helps restore your ability to chew and speak properly while maintaining the shape of your face. By filling the gap, a bridge also prevents the remaining teeth from tilting or shifting out of place.

The procedure involves preparing the teeth on either side of the gap, known as abutment teeth. These teeth are fitted with crowns that support the artificial tooth in the middle. Because the bridge is cemented into place, it feels more stable than a removable denture and does not need to be taken out for cleaning.

In India, tooth loss can sometimes be linked to long-term tobacco or areca nut use, which weakens the supporting structures of the teeth. A bridge can be an effective solution, provided the remaining teeth and gums are healthy enough to support the structure. Your dentist will assess your oral health to ensure a bridge is the right choice for you.

Cleaning under a bridge requires special techniques, such as using interdental cleaners or bridge needles, to remove food particles and plaque. If the supporting teeth develop decay or gum disease, the entire bridge may fail. Regular check-ups with a registered dentist are essential to monitor the condition of the bridge and the health of the surrounding tissues.
