Dental care during pregnancy

A guide to maintaining oral hygiene and safety during pregnancy for mothers and babies.

Maintaining oral health is vital during pregnancy as hormonal changes can increase the risk of gum inflammation. Many expectant mothers in India experience bleeding or swollen gums, often called pregnancy gingivitis. It is safe and recommended to have a dental check-up during this time. Please inform your dentist about your pregnancy so they can tailor your care and avoid certain medications or procedures if necessary.

Good oral hygiene helps prevent infections that might affect your general wellbeing. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth regularly. If you suffer from morning sickness, rinse your mouth with plain water after vomiting to protect your tooth enamel from stomach acid. Avoid brushing immediately after sickness, as the enamel is temporarily softened and can be easily damaged.

Healthy eating is equally important for your dental health and the development of your baby’s teeth. Try to limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals to reduce the risk of tooth decay. Choosing nutritious foods like dairy, vegetables, and fruits supports overall health. If you have any concerns about your teeth or gums, seek advice from a registered dental professional promptly.

Routine dental treatments, such as professional cleaning or fillings, are generally safe during the second trimester. Delaying necessary treatment for dental infections can lead to complications. Your dentist will take precautions, such as using appropriate local anaesthetics and avoiding unnecessary X-rays. Keeping your mouth healthy is one of the best ways to give your child a healthy start in life.
