Dental crowns: protecting a damaged tooth

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its strength and appearance.

A dental crown is a protective cover that fits over a tooth that has been weakened by decay, large fillings, or fractures. It is designed to restore the tooth to its original shape and size while providing the strength needed for chewing. In India, many patients require crowns after root canal treatment to prevent the remaining tooth structure from cracking under pressure.

The process usually involves two visits to a registered dentist. During the first appointment, the dentist prepares the tooth by removing a small amount of outer enamel so the crown can fit over it comfortably. An impression or digital scan is then taken to ensure the custom crown matches your bite and surrounding teeth perfectly.

Once the permanent crown is ready, it is cemented into place. A well-fitted crown helps maintain the alignment of your jaw and prevents other teeth from shifting. It also protects the sensitive inner parts of the tooth from further bacterial infection, which is vital for long-term oral health and comfort.

Maintaining a crown requires the same care as natural teeth. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing are essential to prevent decay at the base of the crown. Patients should avoid biting down on very hard objects, such as ice or unpopped kernels, to ensure the restoration lasts for several years without chipping or loosening.
