Dental injuries during sport

Sports-related dental injuries can range from chipped teeth to jaw fractures and require prompt evaluation by a dentist.

Participating in sports is excellent for health, but it also carries a risk of dental injuries. Common accidents include chipped or broken teeth, teeth being pushed out of position, or even a complete loss of a tooth. In more severe cases, a blow to the face can result in a fractured jaw or damage to the jaw joints. Whether the injury seems minor or significant, it is important to have a registered dentist examine the area to check for hidden damage to the roots or bone.

If a tooth is chipped or broken during play, try to find the broken piece and keep it in a clean container with milk. A dentist can sometimes bond the original fragment back onto the tooth. If a tooth is loose or moved out of place, do not try to force it back yourself; instead, see a professional immediately. Early treatment can often save a tooth that might otherwise be lost, and it helps to prevent long-term complications like infection or permanent nerve damage.

The best way to protect your teeth during physical activity is to wear a professionally fitted mouthguard. Unlike over-the-counter 'boil and bite' guards, a custom-made mouthguard from a dentist provides superior protection by cushioning the teeth and spreading the force of an impact. This not only protects the teeth but also helps reduce the risk of soft tissue injuries to the lips and tongue. It is a vital piece of safety equipment for both children and adults playing contact sports.

If you experience a dental injury, rinse your mouth with water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce swelling. Contact your dentist as soon as possible for an emergency assessment. They will use clinical exams and potentially X-rays to determine the extent of the injury and provide the necessary repairs. Prioritising safety and quick action ensures that you can continue to enjoy your favourite sports while keeping your natural smile intact and healthy.
