Dental sealants for permanent molars

Explaining how sealants protect new permanent teeth from developing cavities.

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, known as molars. These teeth often have deep grooves and pits that are difficult to clean with a toothbrush. In India, sealants are a common preventive measure to protect children's permanent teeth.

The first permanent molars usually appear around the age of six. Because these teeth are new and the enamel is still maturing, they are highly susceptible to decay. Sealants act as a physical barrier, preventing food particles and bacteria from getting trapped in the narrow grooves.

The application process is quick, painless, and does not require any drilling. The dentist cleans the tooth, applies a special gel, and then paints the sealant onto the enamel, where it bonds and hardens. Once in place, sealants can protect teeth from cavities for several years.

Regular dental examinations are necessary to check that the sealants remain intact. If they become worn or chipped, a registered dentist can easily replace them. Combining sealants with good brushing habits and a healthy diet significantly reduces the likelihood of future fillings.
