Dental trauma and pulp vitality testing

Explaining how dentists assess the health of a tooth's nerve following an injury or impact.

Dental trauma, such as a fall or a blow to the face, can significantly affect the health of a tooth's internal pulp. Even if the tooth does not look broken, the impact can damage the blood vessels and nerves inside. To determine if the tooth is still 'alive' or if it requires root canal treatment, a registered dentist will perform a series of assessments known as pulp vitality testing.

Vitality tests help the dentist understand how the nerve is responding. One common method involves applying a cold stimulus to the tooth to see if you feel a brief sensation. Another method uses a small device that delivers a mild electric current to check for a response. If the tooth does not respond to these tests, it may indicate that the pulp has died or is severely damaged, necessitating further intervention.

X-rays are also used to look for signs of trauma below the gum line, such as root fractures or changes in the bone. In India, sports injuries and road accidents are common causes of dental trauma. It is important to seek a dental evaluation immediately after any facial injury, even if there is no immediate pain, as the pulp can sometimes die slowly over several weeks or months.

If a tooth is found to be non-vital, root canal treatment is usually recommended to prevent infection and abscess formation. In some cases, a traumatised tooth may just need to be monitored closely over time to see if the pulp recovers. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial to ensure that any delayed complications are caught early and that the tooth remains functional and healthy.
