Dental X-rays and CBCT: why they may be recommended

The role of dental imaging in diagnosis and why your dentist might require X-rays or a CBCT scan.

Dental X-rays are essential diagnostic tools that allow dentists to see what is happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. While a visual exam shows much, X-rays reveal issues like decay between teeth, infections in the bone, or impacted teeth that are not yet visible. They provide a clear picture of the internal structure of the mouth.

A dentist may recommend different types of X-rays depending on the situation. Bitewing X-rays are common for checking for cavities between back teeth, while periapical X-rays show the entire tooth from the crown to the root. For a more comprehensive view, a panoramic X-ray captures the entire mouth, including the jaws and sinuses, in a single image.

In some cases, a dentist might recommend a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan. This provides a three-dimensional view of the teeth, bone, and nerve pathways. It is particularly useful for planning complex treatments like dental implants or assessing the position of wisdom teeth. These scans offer much more detail than traditional two-dimensional X-rays, allowing for more precise treatment planning.

Safety is a priority, and modern digital X-rays use very low levels of radiation. Dentists follow strict guidelines to ensure that imaging is only performed when necessary for an accurate diagnosis. If you have concerns about dental imaging, discuss them with your registered dentist, who can explain why a specific scan is recommended for your clinical needs.
