Floss and interdental brushes: cleaning between teeth

Discover why cleaning the spaces between your teeth is vital for preventing gum disease and cavities.

There are various tools available for interdental cleaning, including traditional dental floss, tape, and interdental brushes. Floss is often useful for very tight gaps, while interdental brushes come in different sizes to fit larger spaces comfortably. Your choice of tool depends on the alignment of your teeth and your personal preference. The goal is to gently remove debris from the sides of the teeth and just below the gum line.

When using these tools, be careful not to force them, as this can hurt your gums. For floss, gently guide it between the teeth using a back-and-forth motion and curve it around the base of each tooth. For interdental brushes, insert them gently and move them horizontally. It is common for gums to bleed slightly when you first start this routine, but this usually stops as your gums become healthier.

Regular interdental cleaning significantly reduces the risk of inflammation and bad breath. If you find flossing difficult or are unsure which size of interdental brush to use, a registered dentist or dental hygienist can help. They can show you the correct technique and recommend the best products for your mouth, ensuring you clean effectively without causing irritation to your gum tissues.
