Heart conditions and dental treatment planning

How your heart health influences dental care and the importance of professional coordination.

Your heart health and oral health are closely linked, and it is important for your dentist to know about any cardiac conditions you may have. Issues such as heart valve problems, a history of heart attacks, or high blood pressure can influence how dental treatments are performed. Providing a complete medical history allows your registered dentist to provide the safest possible care.

For some patients with specific heart conditions, there was historically a practice of taking antibiotics before dental work to prevent heart infections. Current guidelines have changed, and antibiotics are now only recommended for a very small group of high-risk patients. Your dentist will follow the latest evidence-based protocols to decide if this is necessary for you, often in consultation with your cardiologist.
