Immediate loading and temporary teeth

An overview of receiving temporary prosthetic teeth on the same day as implant surgery.

Immediate loading is a procedure where a temporary tooth or bridge is attached to a dental implant shortly after it has been surgically placed. This approach is often called same-day teeth. The primary benefit is aesthetic, as it allows patients to leave the dental clinic with a visible tooth rather than a gap or a removable denture while the implant heals inside the bone.

The temporary tooth provided during this phase is designed for appearance and speech rather than heavy chewing. It is usually kept slightly shorter than the surrounding teeth to prevent it from making contact when you bite down. This protects the healing implant from excessive pressure, which could interfere with osseointegration, the process where the bone bonds to the implant surface.

Not every patient is a candidate for immediate loading. The dentist must ensure the implant has achieved high primary stability during surgery, meaning it is firmly anchored in the bone. Factors such as bone density and the patient’s overall health play a significant role. If the bone is too soft or the site is complex, your dentist may recommend a traditional healing period before any teeth are attached.

During the weeks following the procedure, it is vital to follow a soft-food diet as advised by your clinician. This minimizes the mechanical stress on the healing site. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the stability of the implant before the final, permanent crown is fitted. If you notice any movement or discomfort, you should contact your dental surgery immediately for an assessment.
