Implant maintenance

Caring for implants after the treatment is finished

Learn why dental implants need daily cleaning and professional maintenance, and which signs should prompt a review.

The visible replacement tooth may be artificial, but the tissues surrounding an implant are living tissues. They need care throughout the life of the restoration.

Inflammation can affect the soft tissues around implants and, in more advanced disease, the supporting bone. Bleeding, tenderness and changes around an implant should not be dismissed because the implant itself cannot develop a cavity.

Ask your dental team to demonstrate cleaning around your specific crown, bridge or denture. Different designs create different access challenges. Keep the maintenance schedule recommended for your risk and restoration.

Contact the dentist if an implant or its attached restoration feels loose, painful or different when biting. Avoid attempting to tighten or repair it yourself. Keep records of components and previous treatment so another clinician can understand the system if you move. Maintenance is part of implant treatment, not an optional extra after surgery.
