Tooth decay and restorations

Inlays and onlays explained

A look at custom-made restorations used for teeth with moderate decay or damage.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used when a tooth has too much damage for a standard filling but not enough to require a full crown. They are typically crafted in a dental laboratory from materials like porcelain or gold. An inlay fits within the grooves of the biting surface, while an onlay covers one or more of the tooth's cusps.

These restorations are known for their exceptional strength and durability. Because they are custom-fit to the specific shape of the cavity, they provide a very precise seal that helps prevent further decay. This makes them an excellent choice for the large chewing teeth at the back of the mouth, which must withstand significant pressure every day.

The process usually requires two appointments. During the first visit, the dentist removes the decay and takes an impression of the tooth. A temporary restoration is placed while the permanent one is being made. At the second visit, the dentist bonds the custom-made inlay or onlay securely onto the tooth, ensuring a perfect fit and a comfortable bite.

Choosing an inlay or onlay can help preserve more of your natural tooth structure than a crown would. This conservative approach is beneficial for the long-term health of the tooth. If you have a large cavity or a broken tooth, a registered dentist can advise if a custom-made restoration is the best solution for your needs.
