Many mouth ulcers have non-cancerous causes, but persistent changes should be examined. A sore, lump, thickened area or red or white patch lasting more than two weeks deserves attention from a dentist or doctor.
Other concerning changes include unexplained bleeding, numbness, a neck lump or difficulty moving the tongue, chewing or swallowing. Symptoms do not establish a cancer diagnosis; assessment and sometimes tissue testing are needed.
In India, awareness of tobacco and areca nut products is especially important. Areca nut, also called supari, is not a safe alternative simply because a product contains no tobacco. Seek support to stop use rather than assuming rinsing or brushing cancels the risk.
Do not diagnose a patch using photographs or AI alone. Arrange examination and follow any referral. Early attention is more useful than repeatedly trying mouth gels while an unexplained lesion persists.
