Overbite, underbite and crossbite

Understanding common bite misalignments and why correcting them is important for long-term oral health.

Bite misalignments, or malocclusions, occur when the upper and lower teeth do not meet properly. An overbite is when the upper front teeth overlap significantly with the lower front teeth. An underbite occurs when the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth. A crossbite happens when some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside. Each of these conditions can affect how you chew and speak.

If left untreated, an incorrect bite can cause uneven wear on the tooth enamel and may place undue stress on the jaw joints. Over time, this can lead to discomfort or difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene. In some cases, a severe overbite can increase the risk of injury to the front teeth. Correcting these issues is about more than just aesthetics; it is about ensuring the entire dental system functions harmoniously.

Treatment for bite issues often involves orthodontic appliances like braces or aligners. A registered dentist will evaluate the relationship between your jaws and teeth to determine the cause of the misalignment. Sometimes, the issue is related to the position of the teeth, while at other times, it is due to the shape or size of the jawbones. Early intervention, especially in children, can often make correcting these bites much simpler.

Patients in India should seek professional advice if they notice their teeth do not fit together comfortably. A dentist can provide a clear diagnosis and suggest a treatment plan tailored to the specific type of bite issue. By correcting a misalignment, you can improve your long-term oral health and reduce the risk of future dental complications related to wear and jaw strain.
