Partial dentures: types and care

Partial dentures replace several missing teeth and are held in place by your remaining natural teeth.

A partial denture is a removable appliance designed for patients who still have some of their natural teeth. It consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-coloured base, often supported by a metal or plastic frame. These devices help restore your smile and prevent your remaining teeth from shifting into the empty spaces.

There are different types of partial dentures, including those with metal clasps that grip onto natural teeth and flexible versions made from special resins. The choice depends on the health of your remaining teeth and your personal comfort. A registered dentist will help determine which type provides the best balance of stability, appearance, and ease of use.

Proper care is essential to ensure the longevity of the appliance and the health of your mouth. Partial dentures should be removed at night to allow your gum tissues to rest. When the denture is out of your mouth, it should be kept in water or a dedicated soaking solution to prevent it from drying out or warping.

You must also pay extra attention to cleaning the natural teeth that support the denture. Plaque can easily build up around the clasps and the areas where the denture meets the gums. Brushing twice a day and cleaning the denture thoroughly every day will help prevent decay and gum disease, ensuring your remaining teeth stay strong.
