Pulpotomy and pulpectomy in primary teeth

Information on dental treatments used to save infected or damaged baby teeth.

When a baby tooth has deep decay or has been injured, the soft tissue inside, called the pulp, can become infected. If left untreated, this can cause pain and swelling. To save the tooth and avoid early extraction, a registered dentist may recommend a pulpotomy or a pulpectomy.

This guidance has been withdrawn while it awaits confirmation by a registered dentist. Please consult a registered dentist for advice on this point.

If the infection has spread into the roots, a pulpectomy may be required. In this case, the entire pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned and filled with a material that the body can eventually absorb. This allows the baby tooth to stay in place until it is naturally replaced by an adult tooth.

These treatments are vital for preserving the space needed for permanent teeth to grow correctly. Saving a primary tooth helps prevent alignment issues later in life. If your child complains of persistent toothache or sensitivity, seek advice from a dental professional promptly.
