Root canal treatment versus extraction

Comparing the benefits of preserving a natural tooth through root canal therapy against the alternative of tooth removal.

When a tooth is severely damaged, patients often face a choice between root canal treatment and extraction. While removing a tooth might seem like a quick solution for pain, preserving your natural tooth is almost always the better long-term option for your oral health. A root canal allows you to keep your original tooth structure, which helps maintain the alignment of your other teeth and supports your jawbone.

Extracting a tooth leaves a gap that can cause neighbouring teeth to shift or tilt over time. This movement can lead to problems with your bite, difficulty chewing, and even issues with your jaw joints. Furthermore, replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or an implant often involves more time and higher costs than saving the original tooth through a root canal procedure. The natural tooth also provides better sensory feedback when eating.

Root canal treatment has a high success rate and allows you to function normally once the tooth is restored. Although the tooth is no longer 'alive' because the nerve has been removed, it is still held firmly in place by the surrounding tissues. This stability is difficult to replicate perfectly with artificial replacements. Saving the tooth also prevents the bone loss that typically occurs in the jaw after an extraction.

In some instances, such as a deep vertical fracture or severe bone loss, extraction may be the only viable option. A registered dentist will perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to determine if the tooth can be saved. In India, where diet and lifestyle can impact dental health, making an informed decision with your dentist is the best way to ensure a healthy, functional mouth for years to come.
