Signs that a tooth’s pulp may be inflamed or infected

A guide to identifying common symptoms that indicate the internal nerve of a tooth requires professional attention.

Recognising the early warning signs of pulp inflammation, known as pulpitis, is vital for preventing serious dental complications. One of the most common symptoms is persistent pain, which may range from a dull ache to a sharp, throbbing sensation. You might notice that the pain worsens when you lie down or when you are biting down on food. These sensations often suggest that the nerve is under significant pressure.

Sensitivity to temperature is another key indicator of internal damage. If you experience lingering pain after consuming hot tea or cold water, it may mean the pulp is struggling to recover from an insult. Unlike normal sensitivity, which passes quickly, pulp-related pain often lasts for several minutes or even hours. In some cases, the tooth may also appear darker or discoloured compared to the surrounding teeth.

Swelling of the gums near a specific tooth can indicate that an infection has spread beyond the root. You might observe a small, pimple-like bump on the gum, which may discharge fluid. In India, where many adults use smokeless tobacco or areca nut, it is important not to confuse these symptoms with general gum irritation. Professional diagnosis by a dentist is necessary to determine if the internal pulp is the source of the problem.

Occasionally, a tooth requiring root canal treatment may not cause any pain at all. This happens if the nerve has died slowly over time, though the underlying infection remains active and can cause sudden swelling later. Regular dental check-ups are essential to identify these silent issues before they become emergencies. If you notice any of these signs, you should consult a registered dental professional immediately.
