Silver diamine fluoride: benefits and permanent staining

An alternative treatment for managing tooth decay, particularly in children or elderly patients.

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid medication used to stop the progression of tooth decay. It is a non-invasive treatment that is simply painted onto the affected area of the tooth. The silver acts as an antimicrobial agent to kill bacteria, while the fluoride helps to strengthen the tooth structure and prevent further mineral loss.

This treatment is often used for young children who may find traditional drilling difficult, or for elderly patients where complex procedures might be challenging. It is a quick and painless way to 'freeze' decay, preventing it from getting worse until a more permanent restoration can be placed or to manage the condition conservatively.

SDF is a valuable tool in modern dentistry for managing decay without immediate drilling. However, it is not suitable for all types of cavities, especially if the decay has already reached the nerve. Your registered dentist can discuss whether SDF is an appropriate option for you or your family members based on the location and severity of the decay.
