Root canal treatment

Single-visit and multiple-visit root canal treatment

An overview of the different appointment structures available for root canal therapy based on clinical needs.

Root canal treatment can be completed in either a single appointment or over several visits, depending on the complexity of the case. The decision is usually made by your dentist based on the health of the tooth and the presence of any active infection. Both methods aim to thoroughly clean the root canals and seal them against future bacterial invasion to save the natural tooth.

Single-visit treatment is often suitable when the pulp is inflamed but not yet heavily infected by bacteria. If the dentist can effectively clean and dry the canals in one session, they may choose to complete the filling immediately. This approach is convenient for many patients and reduces the number of times local anaesthetic is required. It relies on the tooth being free of significant swelling or discharge at the time of the procedure.

Multiple-visit treatment is frequently recommended if there is a persistent infection or a dental abscess. During the first visit, the dentist cleans the canals and places a medicinal dressing inside to help eliminate bacteria. A temporary filling is then used to seal the tooth until the next appointment. This allows time for the infection to subside and for the dentist to ensure the environment is sterile before the final seal is placed.

Regardless of the number of visits, the primary goal remains the thorough disinfection of the tooth. Your dentist will monitor your progress and determine the best timeline for your specific situation. It is important to attend all scheduled appointments, even if the tooth feels better after the first visit, to ensure the treatment is fully completed and the tooth is protected.
