Teeth whitening: a brighter shade has limits

Learn what whitening can and cannot change, why examination matters and which side effects to discuss.

Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth. It does not make existing crowns, implants or dentures match a newly whitened shade. This is important when planning cosmetic treatment around visible restorations.

A dental examination helps identify decay, gum problems and reasons for discolouration before treatment. Ask which method is appropriate and what outcome is realistic. A promised perfectly white result is not a substitute for assessment.

Sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. Follow the instructions for the product provided by your dentist rather than increasing use to chase a faster result. Avoid improvised bleaching mixtures and abrasive home remedies.

Whitening is not permanent, and the result varies. Ask whether any planned restorative work should be timed around colour changes. Cosmetic treatment should preserve health and tooth structure while addressing your preferences, rather than making you feel that normal variations in tooth colour are a disease.
