The implant treatment journey

A step-by-step guide to the stages involved in receiving a dental implant.

The journey toward a dental implant begins with a detailed consultation and planning phase. Your dentist will take X-rays and impressions to create a personalized treatment plan. This stage is crucial for identifying the exact placement of the implant and ensuring there is enough bone to support it. You will discuss your goals and any medical conditions that might influence the healing process during these initial appointments.

The next stage is the surgical placement of the implant post into the jawbone. This is usually performed under local anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort. After the post is placed, a period of healing is required, which can take several months. During this time, the bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration. A temporary tooth may sometimes be provided so you are not left with a visible gap.

Once the implant is securely fused with the bone, the dentist attaches the abutment. This connector piece will eventually hold the final crown. A short period of gum healing follows this step. Finally, your custom-made crown is fabricated in a laboratory and then fitted onto the abutment. The dentist will make fine adjustments to ensure your bite is comfortable and the new tooth looks natural alongside your others.

After the final crown is placed, the journey continues with long-term maintenance. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the health of the implant and the surrounding tissues. Consistent brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings are essential to prevent infections. By following these steps and working closely with your dental team, you can achieve a functional and durable replacement for your missing tooth.
