Toothache: causes and when to seek help

A guide to understanding the various causes of dental pain and identifying when urgent professional consultation is required.

Toothache can range from a dull ache to sharp, throbbing pain that disrupts sleep or daily activities. Common causes include dental decay, which allows bacteria to affect the inner pulp, or a dental abscess at the root. In India, diets high in sugar or certain snacks can contribute to the gradual breakdown of enamel, leading to increased sensitivity and eventual pain if left untreated.

A dentist will diagnose the cause by examining the tooth and often taking a dental X-ray. They look for signs of infection, fractures, or issues with existing fillings. During the examination, they may tap on the tooth or check for sensitivity to temperature to pinpoint the exact location of the problem. It is essential to identify the root cause rather than just masking the pain.

You should seek professional help immediately if the pain is severe, lasts longer than two days, or is accompanied by a high temperature. Signs of swelling in the gums or face are particularly serious, as they may indicate a spreading infection. Avoiding a visit can allow a small cavity to progress into a more complex issue requiring more extensive treatment later.

Managing toothache at home is only a temporary measure. While salt water rinses or simple painkillers might provide brief relief, they do not treat the underlying cause. A registered dentist can provide a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan to ensure the infection is cleared and the tooth is preserved. Regular check-ups are the best way to catch these problems before they become painful.
