Treating tooth discolouration

Exploring the different causes of tooth stains and the professional treatments available to restore a brighter appearance.

Tooth discolouration can be classified as either extrinsic or intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are on the surface and are often caused by lifestyle factors such as smoking, chewing tobacco, or consuming dark liquids like tea and coffee. Intrinsic stains occur within the tooth structure itself and can be caused by certain medications, trauma, or excessive fluoride intake during childhood.

For surface stains, a professional cleaning or scaling by a dentist can often produce significant improvement. This removes the buildup of plaque and tartar that holds onto pigments. If the discolouration persists, professional teeth whitening may be recommended to penetrate the enamel and break down deeper stains, provided the teeth and gums are healthy enough for treatment.

Intrinsic stains are more challenging to treat with whitening alone. In these cases, restorative options such as bonding or veneers may be more effective. These treatments cover the discoloured tooth with a thin layer of material, providing a uniform colour. Your dentist will determine the cause of your discolouration to ensure the most appropriate method is selected.
