Understanding BDS, MDS and specialist referrals

An explanation of dental qualifications in India and when specialist care is necessary.

In India, a BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is the primary degree required to practice dentistry. A dentist with a BDS is a general practitioner capable of handling most common dental needs, such as fillings, cleanings, and simple extractions. They are trained to manage your overall oral health and provide preventive advice. Most patients start their dental journey with a general dentist for routine check-ups.

An MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) indicates that a dentist has completed three additional years of specialised training in a specific field. There are various specialities, such as Endodontics for root canals, Periodontics for gum health, and Orthodontics for teeth alignment. If your dental issue is complex or requires advanced surgical intervention, your general dentist may refer you to an MDS specialist to ensure you receive the most appropriate care.

Specialist referrals are a sign of professional integrity. They mean your dentist prioritises your health by involving an expert in a specific area of dentistry. For example, complex surgeries or advanced gum diseases might be better managed by a specialist who focuses solely on those treatments. Patients should feel comfortable asking why a referral is necessary and what the specialist's specific area of expertise involves.

Understanding these qualifications helps you make informed decisions about who is treating you. While a general dentist can perform many tasks, certain situations demand the advanced skills of a specialist. Always ensure that any specialist you see is also registered with the relevant dental council. This collaborative approach between generalists and specialists ensures that you receive comprehensive and safe dental treatment for your specific needs.
