Dental implant foundations

Who may be suitable for a dental implant?

Criteria for determining if a patient is an appropriate candidate for dental implant surgery.

Suitability for dental implants depends largely on the health of the jawbone and the patient's general physical condition. A candidate must have sufficient bone density to support the implant post and healthy gum tissues free of disease. A registered dentist will use imaging techniques, such as X-rays or scans, to evaluate the volume and quality of the bone before recommending the procedure to a patient.

Chronic conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune disorders may affect how the body heals after surgery. It is important to discuss your full medical history with your dental professional. They will assess whether your body can successfully integrate the titanium post into the bone. In some cases, if the bone is too thin, additional procedures such as bone grafting might be suggested before the implant can be placed.

Lifestyle choices also play a major role in determining suitability. Habits such as heavy smoking or the use of smokeless tobacco, which is common in many parts of India, can impair blood flow to the gums and slow down the healing process. Patients who are committed to quitting these habits and maintaining excellent oral hygiene generally have a higher chance of a successful outcome with their dental implants.
