Why a root-treated tooth may need a crown

An explanation of why a dental crown is often necessary to protect and strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy.

A crown, often referred to as a 'cap', fits over the entire visible portion of the tooth. It acts as a shield, distributing the forces of biting more evenly and preventing the tooth from splitting. This is especially important for the back teeth, such as molars, which endure the greatest pressure when you eat. Without a crown, a root-treated tooth is at a much higher risk of breaking, which might eventually require the tooth to be removed.

In India, diets often include hard or crunchy foods that can put significant stress on treated teeth. If you have a history of grinding your teeth or if you use tobacco products, the risks to a weakened tooth are even higher. Placing a crown helps to restore the tooth’s shape, appearance, and function, allowing you to eat comfortably without fear of damage. The crown also provides a final seal to prevent bacteria from re-infecting the canals.

Your dentist will discuss the different materials available for crowns, such as porcelain or metal alloys, to find the best fit for your needs. The process usually involves shaping the tooth and taking an impression. While a crown is an additional step, it is a vital investment in the longevity of your root canal treatment and the overall health of your mouth.
